What is gauzy cashmere?

If you’re new to Oats & Rice, gauzy cashmere is a wonderful place to start. It’s one of the fabrics our clients fall in love with from the very first touch. Before we dive into the details, here are a few examples from our collection, so you can get a sense of what we mean.

Gauzy cashmere refers to cashmere that is woven in an extremely lightweight, airy, semi-transparent structure. It’s not a different fibre, it’s still pure cashmere, but its construction creates a very unique feel. What should you expect from it?

1. Ultra-fine yarn

Usually it’s made from a very fine cashmere yarn. This allows the fabric to be spun into a featherlight, almost weightless texture. In our collection, for example, the Macaron scarf measures 110 × 195 cm and weighs just 75 g. That’s less than a pair of socks!

2. Loose, open construction

The weaving is intentionally open, creating a sheer effect with a soft-focus visual quality and a gentle drape.

3. Soft, airy handfeel

Because of the open structure, gauzy cashmere has more air trapped between fibres, making it warm despite being thin. It is very soft, with many of our clients experiencing the “wow” effect when touching it for the first time. They often describe its delicate elegance as “ethereal”, “airy”, or “like touching a cloud”.

4. Common uses

You will find gauzy cashmere in our lightweight scarf selection (airy collection). These pieces are incredibly versatile: they double as sarongs, wraps, or travel layers and are popular in warm-weather destinations because they pack down to almost nothing.

Many clients take them on holidays as beach cover-ups, evening wraps, or easy layers for flights, and the same scarf works beautifully in winter as a soft, insulating neck layer. This makes gauzy cashmere ideal for both summer and winter, from beaches to mountain resorts, and for anyone who wants one piece they can use in many settings.

5. Looking after gauzy cashmere

Gauzy cashmere is made to feel light and airy, so it naturally has a more delicate personality than denser fabrics. With a little bit of extra care it will stay beautiful for years. Pilling is minimal thanks to the super-fine yarn, though it’s best to keep it away from velcro or sharp accessories to avoid snags. For more cashmere care tips, visit this page.

Gauzy cashmere has become a favourite among our clients for its year-round versatility and premium feel. From warm holidays to winter escapes, it adapts beautifully to every setting. And if you’re unsure which style suits you best, the Oats & Rice team is always happy to help.
